Constipation is defined as having less than three bowel movements per week. There are multiple
causes of constipation, i.e. colonic inertia, pelvic floor dysfunction, drugs being taken for other
conditions, thyroid problems, or constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome.
After an initial consultation a person may require various studies including x-ray's, laboratory values,
or a colonoscopy to make a diagnosis and initiate a treatment protocol.
Patients with Constipation can suffer from discomfort as well as fear for why they are not having a bowel movement.
Most constipation can be easily and quickly treated; however, sometimes it can be a symptom of disease that needs additional treatments. Note all of your symptoms down on a list so that you can give your doctor all the information about your health that is related to constipation, including medicines, over the counter remedies and vitamins, weight changes, etc.
